Dental Exams & Xrays At Winchester Dental

You care about your oral health, and you want a healthy, attractive smile.  It all begins with an oral exam and dental x-rays at Winchester Dental.

Just like a physical by your physician, or an allergy test by the specialist, a dental consultation is a thorough dental exam with x-rays to assess how healthy your mouth is.  We look at the health of your teeth, gums, connecting tissues, tongue, soft tissue inside your cheeks, jawbone and throat.  We look at each individually, and how some components work together for proper function – for example how your teeth fit together when you bite down.

Most of the exam is done visually.  Gum measurements are taken.  Swabs or photos may be taken.  And to get a deeper look at areas that can’t be seen by the naked eye, x-rays will be taken.

Dental x-rays allow us to detect:

• Abscesses or cysts inside your mouth or jawbone
• Bone loss in the jaw
• Possible tumours inside your mouth or jawbone
• Tooth decay
• Tooth or root problems
• Gumline issues

Your best oral health includes x-rays.

About Dental Xrays

How Do X-rays Work

When X-rays pass through your mouth during a dental exam, more X-rays are absorbed by the denser parts (such as teeth and bone) than by soft tissues (such as cheeks and gums) before striking the film or x-ray sensor for digital x-rays. This creates an image on the radiograph. Teeth appear lighter because fewer X-rays penetrate to reach the film. Cavities or bone from gum disease appear as darker areas because of more X-ray penetration. The interpretation of these X-rays allows the dentist to safely and accurately detect hidden abnormalities.

How Often Do I Need Dental X-rays?

How often dental X-rays are needed depends on individual health needs. It is important to recognize that just as each patient is different from the next, so should the scheduling of dental x-rays be individualized for each patient. Your medical and dental history will be reviewed and your mouth examined before a decision is made to take X-rays of your teeth.

The schedule for needing radiographs at recall visits varies according to your age, risk for disease and signs and symptoms you have, if any.  New dental x-rays may be needed to detect new cavities, or to determine the status of gum disease, or for evaluation of growth and development in children.

Children may need X-rays more often than adults. This is because their teeth and jaws are still developing and because their teeth are more likely to be affected by tooth decay than those of adults.

Rest assured that dental x-rays are safe, and we use low radiation dental technology in our brand new, modern dental office.  And of course, we only take x-rays when they are truly required to give you the best dental treatment.

Let’s address any dental concerns you may have during a thorough dental exam.  Your oral health matters to us.  Contact us today to schedule your appointment.
