The Cost Of Invisalign, And What Your Insurance Will Cover

The cost of Invisalign treatment depends on how long it will take to correct your orthodontic condition. There are Express cases for milder orthodontic conditions and Full cases for more involved issues. Generally, an Express Invisalign case costs $2,000 and a full Invisalign case costs $5,500. Read on as we explain how dental insurance works in Ontario, what dental insurance covers and what you can expect to pay for your Invisalign treatment, whether you have insurance or not.

Dental Fees In Ontario

Dental treatment fees in Ontario are regulated. Dentists are obligated to invoice services according to the Ontario Dental Fee Guide. This means that whether you visit a dentist in Whitby, Oshawa, or Thunder Bay, you should be charged the same fee for the same service anywhere in Ontario – Invisalign included.

The cost of treatment is the same for patients with insurance and those without insurance.

This is also true of medical visits or health care. Dentistry is a type of health care, however it is not covered by OHIP.

Dental Insurance Payments In Ontario

Non Assignment Offices – Or You Pay The Dentist, And Your Insurance Pays You

Dental offices in Ontario may take payments direct from patients.

These non-assignment offices will ask you to pay for treatment in full. If you have dental insurance, the office will submit an insurance claim on your behalf, and your insurance will reimburse you directly, generally within days of your treatment.

Patients without insurance pay directly for dental services they received.

Assignment Offices – Or Insurance Pays The Dentist Directly, And You Pay Your Portion Only

Your dental office may choose to accept assignment of benefits, if your plan allows it. This means, your dental office may allow your insurance company to pay the dentist directly for the portion of your treatment which is covered by your plan, and you will only pay the dentist for the remaining portion.

Due to changes in privacy laws, some dental insurance plans no longer allow for assignment of benefits, which means you must pay the dentist in full, and wait to receive payment from your insurance.

Again, patients without insurance pay directly for dental services they received.

There are over 80,000 dental plans in Ontario covering a range of fees, so don’t be surprised if an office does not accept assignment. And don’t try to compare your coverage for Invisalign treatment fees to someone else’s. Read on for common insurance payments for Invisalign treatment.

I have dental insurance. How much will my portion of Invisalign cost me?

This depends on how much your dental plan covers. Each plan is different. The most common types of coverage we have encountered is that your insurance will either not cover orthodontic treatment at all, will cover it to 50%, or will cover it to 75%. Here are some examples to help you.

Example Of Invisalign Costs If Your Insurance Covers 50% Of Orthodontic Coverage

If your insurance covers 50% of orthodontics on the current fee guide, and your case is a full case, the cost of treatment is $5500. 50% insurance coverage pays for $2750. Your 50% portion is $2750. You can pay the full $2750 in a single payment, or choose a 12 month payment plan of $229.16 per month for a period of 12 months.

If your insurance covers 50% of orthodontics on the current fee guide, and your case is an express case, the cost of treatment is $2000. 50% insurance coverage pays for $1000. Your 50% portion is $1000. You can pay the full $1000 in a single payment, or choose a 6 month payment plan of $166.67 per month for a period of 6months.

Example Of Invisalign Costs If Your Insurance Covers 75% Of Orthodontic Coverage

If your insurance covers 75% of orthodontics on the current fee guide, and your case is a full case, the cost of treatment is $5500. 75% insurance coverage pays for $4125. Your 25% portion is $1375. You can pay the full $1375 in a single payment, or choose a 12 month payment plan of $114.58 per month for a period of 12 months.

If your insurance covers 75% of orthodontics on the current fee guide, and your case is an express case, the cost of treatment is $2000. 75% insurance coverage pays for $1500. Your 25% portion is $500. You can pay the full $500 in a single payment, or choose a 6 month payment plan of $83.33 per month for a period of 6months.

What If I Only Want Express Invisalign Treatment?

Orthodontic treatment plans are determined by time required to correct crooked, gapped, misaligned or out of place teeth.  Generally, an express case is suitable for mildly crowded teeth, fixing 1 or 2 small gaps between teeth.  A full case is required for moderate crowding, many gaps, an overbite, an underbite, and other orthodontic issues. Your dentist will take dental x-rays and models of your teeth and explain to you which case type you require to straighten your teeth.
